L'art de conter est un art essentiellement français et nulle région de France n'a produit plus de conteurs exquis que le pays des Troubadours, et parmi les conteurs provençaux nul n'est comparable à Alphonse Daudet, et parmi les contes de Daudet nulle oeuvre ne surpasse les Lettres de mon Moulin .

Les Lettres de mon Moulin sont l'oeuvre radieuse de sa jeunesse. Quand elles parurent dans l'Événement , en 1866, Daudet avait 26 ans. Obligé à 15 ans de quitter sa cité natale de Nîmes, jeté à 17 ans sur le pavé de Paris, ses débuts littéraires avaient été durs. Il s'était essayé dans la poésie, au théâtre, et, avant d'atteindre sa majorité, il avait eu des succès retentissants. Mais les Lettres de mon Moulin furent son premier triomphe populaire.
